The International Contact group welcomes the statement issued by EPPK

In response to the statement by EPPK the International Contact Group (Basque Country)  wants, firstly, to show our satisfaction for the fact that EPPK has concluded the debate on its contribution to the peace process and for doing so in positive and constructive terms for the consolidation of the new scenario open in the Basque Country.

This statement, in the context of the Spanish government’s refusal to respond to the Aiete Declaration more than 2 years ago, highlights the commitment of the Abertzale Left to peace and democracy.

From our experience in various parts of the world, we know that prisoners are a key actor in the consolidation of peace processes. The statement of EPPK shows that Basque prisoners take their responsibility in promoting and encouraging the peace process and are willing to act accordingly.

The situation in the Basque Country today is totally different from what it was a few years ago. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to facilitate the prisoner’s participation in the peace process. An appropriate measure would be to bring the prisoners to the Basque Country. Likewise, changing prison policy, making it more humanitarian and in line with human rights and the international doctrine on this matter, would be an essential contribution to promote peace.

That is why the ICG wants to encourage the Governments of Spain and France to act responsibly and respond positively to this statement of the prisoners by enabling their active participation in the Peace process and by enabling their reintegration into society.
